Repair guide: LG K10 screen

The process of separating the display from the bezel usually destroys the display, so don't follow this guide unless you want to replace the screen.

Step 1

Opening your phone will damage the waterproof seals. Get spare seals before proceeding, or if you are not replacing the adhesive, be careful to avoid exposing your phone to liquids.

Prepare an iOpener and heat the back of the phone along the left edge for about two minutes. It will help soften the adhesive securing the rear case.

It may be necessary to reheat and reapply the iOpener several times until the phone is warm enough. Follow the iOpener's instructions to avoid overheating it.

A hair dryer, heat gun or hot plate can also be used. But be careful not to overheat the phone

Step 2

In the following steps you will cut the adhesive securing the back cover.

Avoid prying or cutting in this area to protect the fingerprint sensor flex cable.

Step 3

Attach a suction cup to the back cover, as close to the heated edge as possible.

The suction cup will not adhere well to the curved part of the glass, so avoid putting it on the edge itself.

If the back cover of the phone is broken, the suction cup may not stick. Try lifting it up with tough tape or gluing the suction cup in place with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and then letting it dry before proceeding.

Lift the left side of the cover with the suction cup to open a small gap between the rear case and the frame.

This action requires you to apply quite significant force, but with the suction cup you only have to open a very small slot to insert your tool.

If you can't, heat again to soften the adhesive more and try again. The adhesive cools down very quickly so it is likely that you will have to reheat it several times.

If you are using an iOpener, follow the instructions to avoid overheating it, otherwise the gel pack may burst.

Step 4

Insert an opening pick into the gap.

The rear glass can break if you apply excessive force or try to pry it with a metal tool.

Once the pick is inserted, you can also put a few drops of isopropyl alcohol in the gap to weaken the adhesive you will work on in the following steps.

Step 5

Slide your opening pick along the left edge of the phone to cut the adhesive securing the back cover.

It is helpful to leave the pick in place and pick up another one to proceed to the next step. Leaving the pick prevents the freshly cut adhesive from sticking back.

Step 6

Continue cutting the adhesive along the bottom edge of the phone.

Reheat the back cover as needed to prevent the adhesive from cooling and solidifying.

The glued area is wider here, you need to insert your pick deeper into the phone to completely detach the panel.

It may again be helpful to leave the opening pick in place and pick up another one for the next step.

Step 7

Cut the adhesive along the top edge and right side.

You can damage the fingerprint sensor flex cable if you insert your pick too deep. Work carefully and orient yourself with the diagram from step 2.

Step 8

Don't try to remove the back cover completely yet.

Lift the back cover from the left side and open it a bit like a book.

Step 9

Use the tip of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the fingerprint sensor flex cable.

Step 10

To reconnect the fingerprint sensor cable during reassembly, first position the back cover until the cable connector is perfectly aligned with its socket.

Then press the connector with the flat end of your spudger to gently snap it into place.

If you have thin hands, you may be able to press the connector into place with your fingers. Just be careful not to force the cable.

This step requires patience and a little experience. Take your time and don't force the connector when you plug it back in.

Step 11

Remove the back cover.

To refit the rear panel:

First, use tweezers to peel any remaining adhesive off the back cover and frame of the phone. Then clean the bonding surfaces with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth to prepare the surface for the application of the new adhesive.

Peel the adhesive backing off the new back glass, carefully align one edge of the glass with the phone shell, and press the glass firmly onto the phone.

To replace the back cover or to install it without using pre-cut adhesive, follow this guide.

Remember to turn on your phone and check your repair before applying the new adhesive and closing the phone again.

If you prefer, you can reassemble the back panel without replacing the adhesive. Remove large pieces of adhesive that may be preventing the cover from aligning properly. After reassembly, heat the cover and press it to secure it well. The phone will no longer be water resistant, but it usually offers more than enough bond strength.

It may be necessary to transfer the camera frame to your new component. If that's the case for you, follow our camera bezel replacement guide.

Step 12

Samsung Galaxy S8 + battery disconnection
Remove the eleven 3,7mm Phillips screws securing the wireless charging coil and antenna assembly.

If some screws are difficult to remove even after they have been completely unscrewed, you can pull them out with tweezers.

Step 13

The wireless charging coil + antenna assembly is also secured by small plastic clips.

Use a spudger to gently pry the plastic in the marked areas and release the clips.

Step 14

Remove the wireless charging coil + antenna assembly.

When reassembling, insert the top edge of the assembly first into the phone frame and then gently press down on the rest to snap it into place.

Step 15

Use a spudger to disconnect the battery by prying the connector out of its socket vertically.

Step 16 Screen

Using a spudger, disconnect the display by gently prying its flex cable connector attached to the input on the motherboard.

If necessary, temporarily put the back cover back on the phone to protect the motherboard and battery from accidental damage in the next steps.

Step 17

Heat the bottom of the display to soften the adhesive securing it to the phone.

The glue that holds the display in place can be significantly tougher than the glue that secures the back of the phone. If necessary, switch to a hair dryer or heat gun to reach a temperature sufficient to weaken the adhesive.

Step 18

If possible, place a suction cup near the bottom edge of the screen.

If the display has many cracks, the suction cup may not stick. Try prying up the display with stubborn tape, or glue the suction cup with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and let it dry so you can proceed.

Step 19

Pull the suction cup to lift the bottom edge of the display to create a gap between the display and frame.

Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Eventually, once you have inserted the pick, you can add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to the gap to help weaken the adhesive in the next steps.

Step 20

Slide the opening pick along the bottom of the display to separate it from the adhesive underneath.

Step 21

Leave the opening pick in place and take a second before proceeding to the next step. Leaving this pick will prevent the glue you just separated from sticking again.

Step 22

Reheat the iOpener and use it to reheat the left side of the display again for at least 2 minutes.
Step 23
Use the opening pick to separate the adhesive under the left side of the display.

Step 24

Apply heat to the right side of the display for at least 2 minutes.

If you are using an iOpener, you can re-heat it if necessary, but follow these instructions to avoid overheating, otherwise the gel case may break.

Step 25

Use the pick to separate the adhesive under the right edge of the display.

The display flex cable is located just below the middle of this side and could therefore interfere with the pick if you insert it too far.

Step 26

Heat the top of the screen for at least 2 minutes.

If you are using an iOpener, you can re-heat it if necessary, but follow the instructions to avoid overheating, otherwise the gel wrap may break.

Step 27

Do not apply too much force, otherwise you risk damaging the sensors on the front of the screen and the speaker assembly. You can return to this part to end the separation after the rest of the display is clear.
Gently move the pick under the top of the display to separate it from the adhesive underneath.

Step 28

Remember that the display flex cable is located in the middle of the right side and may interfere with the pick.

Use extra care when prying on the top edge so as not to damage the sensors on the front and the speaker.

Use the picks where they are needed to finish the separation from the adhesive underneath the entire display.

Step 29

Lift and separate the left side of the display completely from the frame.

The opposite side will require more attention in separation due to the presence of the display flex cable.

Step 30

To completely separate the right side of the display, guide the display flex cable through its hole in the frame.

Step 31

Remove the display.

Follow this link for a detailed guide to applying the screen sticker.

Before installing a new display, it is essential to remove all traces of the old adhesive from the frame, also taking care to remove any glass fragments that may be present.

After removing all traces of glue and glass from the frame, clean the adhesion areas with 90% (or higher) isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free rag or American coffee filter. Only move in one direction, not back and forth.

This helps remove any remaining adhesive and prepares the surface for the new adhesive.

If the frame is bent, or if any glue or glass residue remains, the new display will not fit properly and could be damaged. If necessary, replace the frame.

The best way to secure the new screen is to use a pre-cut double-sided adhesive sheet. Apply the tape to the back of the display, then carefully move the display cable across the frame. Line up the screen and press it into place
